SpaceChem – Programming: The Game

SpaceChem is a new “design-based puzzle game” from Zachtronics Industries, lord and master of one-man mind-bending puzzle games. I’ll let him explain.

Zachtronics Industries is back with an ambitious new design-based puzzle game. Take on the role of a Reactor Engineer working for SpaceChem, the leading chemical synthesizer for frontier colonies. Construct elaborate factories to transform raw materials into valuable chemical products! Streamline your designs to meet production quotas and survive encounters with the sinister threats that plague SpaceChem.

Having only played them demo, it’s a game about being given a system of controls, a tight boundary of restrictions, and then going nuts with your problem solving moxie. Puzzles abound from getting a handle on the controls, to solving micro problems with those controls, to solving macro problems with those micro solutions, and even to following the story, which is particularly well written for a game that would still be amazing without it. And it’s fun, and incredibly satisfying when you hit Run and this ridiculous thing that you’ve just build… it runs.

Don’t believe me? Ask Rock, Paper, Shotgun, and then download them demo.
